7-Night Alaska with Glacier Bay

Norwegian Encore cruising in front of a tidewater glacier in Alaska

This is a week in Alaska's Inside Passage, round trip from Seattle, so there is no one-way flight to arrange. After a day at sea the ship calls at Juneau, Alaska's capital, and at Skagway, the old Gold Rush town. It then spends a full day of scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park, where tidewater glaciers meet the sea.

On the way south there is a morning in Ketchikan and an evening in Victoria, British Columbia, before an early arrival back in Seattle. Late August usually brings some of the settled weather of the season, humpback whales are still feeding in the Inside Passage, and the summer crowds start to ease. Other sailing dates are available if this week doesn't suit.

Days 1 & 8 · embarkation and disembarkation

Seattle, Washington

Seattle sits between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, with Mount Rainier on the skyline on a clear day. Pike Place Market has been trading on the waterfront since 1907, and the Space Needle was built for the 1962 World's Fair. Boarding starts at 15:00, so there is time for the market on the morning you sail.

Day 3

Juneau, Alaska

Alaska's capital can't be reached by road from the rest of North America, only by sea or air. The Mendenhall Glacier is about 12 miles from downtown, with Nugget Falls pouring down beside it. The waters of Auke Bay are among the best places in Alaska for seeing humpback whales. The ship stays into the evening, until 22:00.

Day 4

Skagway, Alaska

Skagway was the gateway to the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897–98, and the wooden false-front buildings on Broadway are preserved as part of a national historical park. The White Pass & Yukon Route railway, begun in 1898, climbs from the harbour to the summit of White Pass. It is one of the classic day trips in Alaska. The ship is in port from early morning until 20:00.

Day 6

Ketchikan (Ward Cove), Alaska

Ketchikan calls itself the salmon capital of the world. Creek Street, once the town's red-light district, is a boardwalk of buildings on stilts over the creek, and the area has one of the largest collections of standing totem poles in Alaska. The ship docks at Ward Cove, a few miles north of town, and leaves in the early afternoon.

Victoria, British Columbia

The capital of British Columbia, on Vancouver Island. The ship arrives in the evening, when the Parliament Buildings are outlined in lights across the Inner Harbour from the Fairmont Empress hotel. The harbour front is easy to explore on foot for a few hours before the ship sails at midnight.
