Norway's fjords for the first half of the sailing, Iceland's volcanic coast for the second — two of the most dramatic coastlines in the North Atlantic on one ten-night trip. Expect steep green cliffs dropping straight into the water, waterfalls threading down from glacier-fed peaks, and small fishing villages tucked into inlets few ferries reach. Iceland brings a different kind of drama: black-sand beaches, ice caps, geothermal steam rising off the hills, and Kirkjufell — the country's most photographed mountain — rising straight out of the sea. Long summer daylight keeps the scenery lit well into the evening throughout.

Walled cities, cliffside villages, and ancient ruins across the Adriatic and Aegean on a small, adults-only ship built for a coastline like this. Dubrovnik's fortified old town and the fjord-like Bay of Kotor open the trip, then Corfu and Olympia bring ancient Greece within reach before Santorini's whitewashed villages perched above the caldera. The sailing ends in Athens, close enough to the Acropolis for an afternoon there before flying home. Nine nights in October, when the water is still warm and the crowds that fill these ports all summer have mostly gone.

Hong Kong to Yokohama across three countries in thirteen nights. Keelung brings Taipei into range, then Jeju in South Korea before the ship turns north into Japan itself — Nagasaki, Fukuoka, and an overnight in Osaka, long enough for a full day in Kyoto. Kobe and Kochi follow, then Shimizu, where Mount Fuji fills the horizon on a clear day, before ending in Yokohama, at Tokyo's doorstep. Four sea days are spread across the run, giving the ship time to cover real distance between very different countries and coastlines.

Royal Caribbean's new Icon-class ship on a classic week in the western Mediterranean, round trip from Barcelona. It calls at Palma, Marseille for Provence, La Spezia for Florence and Pisa, Civitavecchia for Rome, and Naples for Pompeii and Capri, with just one day at sea. On board there is the largest waterpark at sea, seven pools and 28 places to eat, which makes it an easy choice for families and groups of mixed ages. Mid-May brings warm days before the summer crowds.

A week in Alaska's Inside Passage, round trip from Seattle, so there is no one-way flight to arrange. It calls at Juneau for the Mendenhall Glacier, Skagway for the Gold Rush railway, Ketchikan's Creek Street and Victoria in the evening. The best day is a full day of scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park, among tidewater glaciers. Late August usually brings settled weather and humpback whales, with fewer crowds than midsummer. Norway in November rather than midsummer, sailing north past the Arctic Circle just as the northern lights season begins. The ship stays overnight in both Tromsø and Alta, so you have evenings ashore in the dark, away from the ship's lights, when there is a real chance of seeing the aurora. On the way it calls at Ålesund's Art Nouveau harbour, the mountains around Åndalsnes, Trondheim's medieval cathedral and Bergen's old Hanseatic wharf. It is a round trip from Rotterdam, so there is one airport to fly in and out of.

New Zealand from end to end in late spring, from Auckland and the Bay of Islands down to Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The highlight is a full day in Fiordland, cruising into Dusky, Doubtful and Milford Sounds, where waterfalls drop straight into the fiords. The ship then crosses the Tasman Sea and sails into Sydney Harbour early in the morning. The group rate includes Celebrity's Classic drinks package and basic Wi-Fi.
