7-Night Western Mediterranean

Legend of the Seas sailing past the Faraglioni rocks off Capri

This is a week-long loop of the western Mediterranean on Royal Caribbean's new Icon-class ship. It sails round trip from Barcelona and calls at Palma de Mallorca and at Marseille, the port for Provence. It then follows the Italian coast to La Spezia for Florence and Pisa, Civitavecchia for Rome, and Naples for Pompeii and Capri. There are six ports in seven nights and only one day at sea, and most calls are long enough for a proper day trip inland.

Legend of the Seas is built for families and groups with a wide mix of ages. It has the largest waterpark at sea, seven pools, the Crown's Edge thrill walk and 28 places to eat, so there is plenty to do on board between port days. Mid-May has warm weather and is usually quieter in port than high summer.

Days 1 & 8 · embarkation and disembarkation

Barcelona, Spain

Gaudí's Sagrada Família has been under construction since 1882, and its spires rise above the grid of the Eixample district. The Gothic Quarter, La Rambla and the Boqueria market are all within walking distance of each other near the old port. The ship sails at 17:00, so it is worth arriving a day early.

Day 2

Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Palma's Gothic cathedral, La Seu, stands on the old sea wall above the harbour, and Gaudí worked on its interior in the early 1900s. Behind it is a maze of old-town lanes and courtyards. On the hill above the bay is Bellver Castle, a rare round castle from the fourteenth century.

Day 3

Provence (Marseille), France

France's oldest city was founded by Greek traders around 600 BC. The Old Port is still the centre of town, and the basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde looks down on it from the hill. The limestone Calanques coves are just along the coast, and Aix-en-Provence is less than an hour inland.

Day 4

Florence / Pisa (La Spezia), Italy

The ship docks at La Spezia from morning until evening, which leaves time for a full day in Florence: Brunelleschi's dome, the Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio. Pisa's Leaning Tower is closer, and the Cinque Terre villages are a short train ride along the coast from the port.

The Colosseum in Rome at dusk
Port image: Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy, 16:10

Day 5

Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

Civitavecchia is Rome's cruise port, a little over an hour from the city by road or train. The ship is in port from 07:00 to 20:00, long enough for the Colosseum and the Forum, or St Peter's and the Vatican Museums, without rushing.

Castel dell'Ovo and Mount Vesuvius across the Bay of Naples
Port image: Naples / Capri, Italy, 16:10

Day 6

Naples / Capri, Italy

Naples sits on its bay beneath Mount Vesuvius, and the ruins of Pompeii are about half an hour away. Ferries leave the port for Capri and its Faraglioni rocks, and the Amalfi Coast is within reach on a longer excursion. Naples is also where pizza was born, so lunch ashore is worth planning.
